Newton

Jag sitter och läser John Newtons gamla dagboksanteckningar som del av en kurs. Vem är då Newton? Jo, det är en mångsysslare och kompositör, känd bla för att ha skrivit 'Amazing grace'. Något som många inte känner till är dock att han gjort sig känd som en av de mest brutala slavhandlarna i historien.

Slavar från hans skepp har vittnat om att han var Mwene Puto, dvs Härskaren av de döda. De var övertygade om att de som blev ivägskeppade (för att aldrig komma tillbaka) blev uppätna av Newton. Slavarna såg med skräck hur Newton och hans män drack slavblod till måltiderna (vad som som egentligen var rödvin) och att osten på kaptenens bord var gjord av slavarnas hjärna. Föreställningar som europeerna gärna själva spädde på.

Det finns ett klockrent stycke ur Newtons dagbok som jag måste citera;

The three greatest blessings of witch human nature is capable, are, undoubtly, religion, liberty, and love. In each of these how highly has God distinguished me! But there are whole nations around me, whose languages are entirely different from each other, yet i belive they all agree in this, that they have no words among them expressive of these engaging ideas: from whence I infer, that the ideas themselves have no place in their minds. And as there are no medium between light and darkness, these poor creatures are not only strangers to the advantages which I enjoy, but are plunged in all the country evils [...] The only liberty of witch they have any notion, is an exemption from beeing sold. As for love, there may be some softer souls among them than I have met with; but for the most part, when I have tried to explain this delightful word, I have seldom been in the least understood.
